The Intensity Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Iran Is Ten Times That Of America

Weighted against the size of its economy, the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions in Iran is approximately three times that of China and more than ten times that of the United States, according to the latest European Union statistics. While globally, an average of 0.5 tons of greenhouse gas is emitted per a thousand dollars of gross domestic product (GPD), Iran’s rate is approximately 2.5 tons per thousand dollars of GDP product.

The above chart shows the 2022’s top ten greenhouse producing countries, based on the size of their economies.

The European Union’s official statistics indicate that except for Iran, the other major polluting countries are among the world's largest economies. Iran ranks eighth in the world as a greenhouse gas producer, according to the latest data published on theWorld Bank website in 2022, despite being ranked 41st in terms of global GDP.

The past three decades’ data comparison indicates that despite very low economic growth, Iran has consistently been among the top ten major greenhouse gas producers in the world. Factors such as low economic productivity, dependence on fossil fuels, lack of investment in clean energy, and government indifference to sustainable development contribute to the unusually large  production of greenhouse gases in Iran.
